AFC Waverton 2 - Manor Bullets something beyond 10.
The pitch was declared playable despite the overnight rain. With Robin the net putting up maestro on decorating duties, the setting up took a little longer than normal. The teams eventually lined up 15 mins late after a team effort to connect 2 sets of 18 plastic tubes and two string nets. Thankfully Ali the ref joined in to help as did the bloke who just went out to get a paper and his dog.
So facing the mighty Manor were Lucie in the carefully erected nets, Laura and Kate at the back, Ellie the game controller in the centre of midfield with Lily and Rebecca alongside and the tricky Elia up front on a goal mission. Lauren lost the dib dab dib dab you are out selection process (don't ask I didn't get it either), and started as the super sub. Kiera was suffering from tonsilitis but still came down to support the team. What a star. Odd to see her so quiet though.
Right from the start the Bullets were buzzin. Lucie was forced into getting dirty early and showed her bravery in diving at the feet of onrushing red people. And then they scored, carving through us like a knife through butter. And then another one. Come on Waverton lets play in the other half.
Gradually though Waverton got forward more and more and from a Lily corner, Rebecca popped up to poke the ball home. First goal of the season for her and so well deserved after her efforts all year. The smile on her face was as wide as Mersey. Ellie had a great run through the centre and one on one with the goalie, just hit her shot wide of the left post.
Elia was our best outfield player and showed some really great tricks, at one point turning two of the Bullets players in one move.
At half time the Bullets were easily dominating but in the second, as often happens, the Waverton girls came out fighting. Elia was superb, battling all the way through. Lily dropped into defence and added some experience and strength as well as a good outlet for short goal kicks for Lucie. Lucie made an absolute first class save although she didn't know much about it as the ball hit her in the face. This girl is so brave and as hard as nails. She just got on with it.
Laura made some excellent interventions and gained in confidence as the game went on. Kate too learnt more and more and made some very important tackles. Lauren never stopped running and showed how much she is improving. A great move from our defence on the left led to Elia getting the ball to Ellie who shot home. A great team goal. Soon after Ellie had an absolute rocket of a shot from outside of the box, which was whiskers away from going in.
The game may have been lost, but this team keeps battling. There was some excellent football played, just look at the two goals and the two other Ellie efforts. Elia too showed her skills and looked a class act. She threw herself into some tackles and well deserved her player of the match award.
The girls should feel proud of themselves, especially since they were without Emma, Caitlin and Kiera and both Ellie and Lily were not feeling 100%.
Training this Monday at 7. Then we will have a break from training until Monday Feb 28.
Next Saturday we are away in the cup to Wirral Hawks Girls at Sloping Pitch Park in Birkenhead. Mike will not be there, but Heather will. Some of the girls are away with it being half term including Ellie and Lily. Please let Mike know ASAP of your availability. So far we only have: Lucie, Kiera. Laura and Rebecca. Elia is doubtful. Emma may be available depending on how training goes this week. We need to hear from Caitlin, Lauren and Kate but we will need all three.
