Stuck in the middle with you

2011 got off to a muddy start at Waverton with the visit of Wirral Hawks Ladies to a heavy Queens Field. The pitch was shortened to avoid the boggy areas meaning the game would be tight with plenty of goalscoring chances. No surprise therefore that Lucie won player of the match for her goal-keeping exploits.

With Lily away with school and Kate AWOL, the squad was 9 strong. With Lauren and Ellie volunteering to start as subs, the starting team was Lucie in the nets, the returning Emma and Laura in defence, Kiera, Elia and Rebecca in the middle and Caitlin up front.

It was great to see Emma back after her injury but the poor girl didn't last very long and sadly hobbled off after a few minutes with her ankle hurting her. Ellie came into the defence alongside Laura. Elia came off soon after and Lauren went into midfield.

The Hawks dominated the first half and scored some good goals. Lucie made some fantastic saves and Caitlin scored a great goal at 2-0, but at half time the goal advantage to the Wirral outfit was clear.

In the second half though things were much better for Waverton and much more evenly balanced. We played some good football on a tricky pitch and scored two great goals from Caitlin and one from a run from Ellie down the left from where she then cut in a slipped the ball into the net. Elia was unlucky not to score, likewise Kiera who had a great game, and there were other chances. At the other end, Lucie was so brave in diving at the feet of the on rushing Hawkites. Laura grew in confidence in the second half, Rebecca was always buzzing, Lauren did really well again and is such a great team member in encouraging and supporting the rest, and Caitlin could have had a bagful of goals today.

Not so bad as the scoreline suggests. Indeed the second half was a very good display and quite even.

MOM - Lucie - excellent goalkeeping and well deserved.

thanks to:

  • All of the girls who came on a cold wet day and never gave up right up until the end
  • The parents who all helped with setting up and taking down - much appreciated. This morning wasn't helped by finding the combination lock for the store had been replaced by a key lock and a frantic set of calls to find out who had a key. Thanks Robin for dashing off to collect one from Littleton, without it we'd have been completely stuck.

  • Kiera - I have your elastic band thing

  • Emma - so sorry that your ankle went again. I'm sure with rest it'll get better properly and you'll be back playing with your usual commitment and effort. We've missed you.

Training - a few of the parents and girls said at the end they'd like a training session next Saturday when we have no game. We'll try to get a pitch at Upton.
