Game v Birkenhead Youth Ladies this Sat

Back to some home League action this Saturday when we entertain Birkenhead Youth Ladies at Waverton. Kick off is at 11 and players are asked to meet at 10:30.

Laura is away but all other players are expected.

Birkenhead Youth Ladies are a new team formed by the merging of Wirral Ladies from last year with Birkenhead Youth Centre. Their u12s are playing our u12s at Waverton at 9:30, so if you're down early cheer on our girls.

The club is signing up to the FA Respect campaign and all parents will be asked to sign up the Respect code of conduct. This is part of our aim to be an FA Charter Standard Club. You have probably read about this campaign which is designed to promote respect between players, between coaches and players, between parents and players and between all involved and the referee. The game is losing referees and without them we can't play. They won't keep turning out if they get abuse from players, parents or coaches. It happens, but we have to play our part in stamping it out.

For parents the code commits them to amongst other things giving support, encouraging the players but not trying to coach or tell the girls what to do.

More to follow over the next few weeks.

New goals and gloves

Upton Fc 9 - AFC Waverton 1

At least we know what size goals we are supposed to be playing with, but it doesn't make it easier to keep the ball out. Upton scored some cracking goals but also were lucky with some of them including one which just rolled across Caras's line on the wrong side. Cara's new goalkeeping gloves could do little to stop some of the goals.

The U16s game was still being played when we arrived at Overchurch School and thanks to everyone arriving on time so we could have a proper warm up. This is important to avoid muscle strains and is more important in this age group than in the under 12s.

Some of the girls were recognisable from the strong Upton FC side from last years u12s including Ira who was a constant threat. 1-0 up in the first 10 minutes the home side's advantage was cancelled out through a Nicola goal after just coming on as a sub. Upton got back into it and scored 4 more before half time including a very well taken team goal. In the second half they added another 4 but late on Waverton had a revival and Nicola and Ellie Riste were both unlucky not to get on to the score sheet.

Playing as a team, keeping the shape and not just watching the ball but watching players drifting past us are the things we need to work on, but it will come. Keep your heads up girls, you will learn from playing in this League.

MOM for AFC Waverton Nicola Jones, for Upton FC Abby Bateman

Training this Tuesday at 6pm. League game at Waverton next Saturday.

Game v Upton (WIrral) this Saturday

This Saturday we head up the M53 again to Upton. The game will be played at Overchurch School on Moreton Road. The kick off is 11:00 and players are asked to meet at 10:30. Anybody who needs a lift there, back or both, just let Mike know on 07901552261.

Emma returns but Caitlin is away. All players please let Mike know of their availability by text 07901552261 or using the poll on the right.

Following our training on Tuesday we expect to score at least two goals from corners. Nice cake Kiera, thanks.

Overchurch School is easy to find. Take M53 to Junction 2. Turn off left down the spur road and then take the left hand slip road up to the road above. This is Moreton Road. Turn left and follow the road for about quarter of mile and the school is on the left. Turn into the school entrance and park. If you get to Uplands Road you have gone too far. The field is at the back.

See you there!

Nearly but not quite

AFC Waverton 2 - Wallasey Wanderers Red 4

An excellent fightback from the Waverton girls saw them get right back into this game from being 3-0 down at half time. This was a great performance from the team and shows that they have the quality to compete at this level and determination to fight back from a losing position.

Wallasey started off strongly on the big pitch and took the lead early on from close range. Another two goals followed with Cara powerless to do much about. Waverton's best efforts came from a Nicola header from Kiera's corner which went just over, a low shot from Kiera which hit the side netting, and a brilliant one on one from Lily which just saw the ball eventually inches away from the final poke around the keeper.

At halftime the girls were asked to keep their shape and not to let players drift behind them and the performance from then on was excellent. Ellie M was once again brilliant at the back with Ellie R alongside her always threatening on the attack. Cara was solid when she came out of goal and Olivia and Laura in midfield did their best to cover the expanse of ground. Aimee played in defence and in midfield and was again solid, whilst Caitlin and Nicola showed their strength.

It was these two players who grabbed the goals, and well taken they were. The first, a blast from Nicola followed excellent work from the team and the second from Caitlin running with the ball and coming in from the left. A third goal seemed possible when Waverton put pressure on with a series of long throw ins down the right, but the visitors sealed the game near the end with a well taken individual goal which was deserving of its importance in settling the game.

Wallasey Wanderers are a strong side and this was a great performance all round. Well done girls.

MOM for Waverton - Kiera Berry, for WW, Hannah Connolly.

Training 6PM this Tuesday at Waverton, game away at Upton ko 11:00 next Saturday. Further details to follow.

October fixtures will be published by the League on Monday and as soon as we know, we'll let you know.

Training tops order will be taken soon. See Mike to order one, cost £30.

Baptism of fire

Wallasey Wanderers Red something - AFC Waverton 0

Well this was certainly an introduction to the quality of the Wallasey Girls League. Playing the best side in the League, all Y9 girls, a big pitch with big goals, no goalkeeper, no subs and a boiling hot day. The odds were stacked against us from the start, but the team can be proud of the way they played today and the way in which they kept going.

We promise it won't always be like this and as in the pre-season game the team will shine. Individually today there were excellent performances, although it may not have felt like it at 12:00. Ellie was fantastic in goal in the first half as was Laura in the second, particularly because she filled so little of the goal! Both girls made tremendous saves and may not have been aware that there was applause from both sides of the pitch for some of those brilliant saves.

Aimee is playing very well in defence and was excellent today with some very good tackles and good throw ins and distribution. Emma playing her first game since July fitted in brilliantly alongside Aimee in the first half and just knows what needs to be done. Lily was full of effort and industry as always and the second half in particular saw some of that excellent passing we expect of her. Olivia made some timely interventions in a very difficult midfield where there was a tricky job of closing people down and Nicola showed her strength excellently despite getting injured. Nicola's long range free kick in the second half was a whisker from going in and she deservedly won the home sides vote for man of the match.

Keep your heads up girls. Believe in yourself, you are good and this was a one off, promise. We're only two points from the top of the table!

Man of the match for AFC Waverton - Nicola Jones, for Wallasey Wanderers- Chloe Spree.

Next game - Wallasey Wanderers White - at Waverton next Sat meet there at 12 noon for a 12:30 ko. Anybody not available please let Mike know asap or use poll on right. All three of our teams will be at home on Saturday a real festival of girls football for our club.

Training this Tuesday is at 6:00PM- 7:00 PM for this week only. Mike will take it as Heather is still hobbling around following her knee injury last weekend sustained when playing for Birmingham City. She should be back on the pitch and on the dance floor soon.

Details for Wallasey Wanderers game Sept 12

We begin our League campaign on Saturday with an away game at Wallasey Wanderers. The game will be played in Liscard in Wirral at a playing field known locally as The Delph.

The game kicks off at 11:00 as there is a game between Wallasey Wanderers' other team and Greenleas earlier. Please meet there at 10:30.

Cara and Caitlin are unavailable but all other players are asked to confirm their availability by clicking on the poll on the right or by tel/text Mike on 07901552261 or by email

The name of the field is Withensfield Playing Field and is on Rake Lane in Wallasey. Postcode is CH45 5DP

Click on the link below to take you to details and a map of The Delph.

The best way is to take the M53 right to its end (past junction 1) following signs for the Wallasey Tunnel and All Docks and then when the road splits follow the signs for All Docks and make sure that you do not instead take the Tunnel lane. It is well sign posted but you need to be aware as the split happens quickly and you need to move over lanes to the right. You come down to a roundabout. Turn left, go straight on over lights and follow the road into the Liscard Village centre. Its a one way system, follow it left and then right. Follow the road, it bends slightly left and ignore turning off left or right. This is Rake Lane. The field is on the right a little way along this road.

Park on Rake lane and go through the gate between the houses onto the field.

Looking Good!

Heygarth United 0 AFC Waverton 7

The first pre season game for both teams saw Waverton come out on top with a convincing display at Eastham.

Waverton started brightly and Nicola gave the visitors the lead within the first few minutes. Olivia, playing on the right of midfield, was excellent in delivering a number of pinpoint crosses. Heygarth got back into the game although Ellie Mageean in defence was solid as always. Waverton should have added to the lead when presented with a series of corners towards the end of the first half. Kiera was unlucky not to get onto the score sheet with a shot that went just wide, and then Nicola hit the post. In the second half goals from Ellie Riste, another from Nicola, a hatrick from hot shot Caitlin and an own goal all added up to a great work out.

Cara who had come out of goal for the second half, played well alongside both Ellies in turn at the back. Kiera was solid in goal. Lily helped set up three of the goals, Laura played really well and Aimee was impressive at the back and in midfield.

This was particularly impressive being the first game, that only one training session had taken place and that the new team needed to gel. The girls were excellent and this is a great starting point for the new League season which kicks off formally next Saturday at Wallasey Wanderers with a 11:00 ko.

Thanks to Frank at Heygarth for organising the game and good luck to the Heygarth girls this season.

Details for next weeks game available on web this week . Training on Tuesday 5:30 at Waverton. See you there.

Who would be so daft to put petrol in a diesel car? Great day for the girls, not so good for the coach!

Game v Heygarth

The pre season friendly with Heygarth will take place at Green Lane Eastham this Saturday. All players are asked to meet in the car park at Port Sunlight Tennis Club, off Riverwood Way at 9am. Kick off will be 9:30. Why so early? Mike's off to Wembley!

Confirmed team is:

Cara, Emma, Nicola, Aimee, Caitlin, Laura, Lily, Kiera.

Awaiting confirmation from Ellie M and Olivia,

Directions as on the post below.

Please wear Waverton kit although we shall play in bibs as Heygarth play in yellow too.

At under 12 level we had a good track record against Heygarth beating them twice, losing once and drawing once. The draw was in the Vicars Cross tournament in July. Our best performance was at Green Lane in December with one of the best displays of the season, but Heygarth beat us in April at Waverton in the League. We first played them in a friendly in June 2008 in Eastham when Caitlin made her debut and Cara and Ellie M played.

The under 12 side are playing a friendly on the Wirral too on Saturday, against Upton FC.

See you there!
