Well this was certainly an introduction to the quality of the Wallasey Girls League. Playing the best side in the League, all Y9 girls, a big pitch with big goals, no goalkeeper, no subs and a boiling hot day. The odds were stacked against us from the start, but the team can be proud of the way they played today and the way in which they kept going.
We promise it won't always be like this and as in the pre-season game the team will shine. Individually today there were excellent performances, although it may not have felt like it at 12:00. Ellie was fantastic in goal in the first half as was Laura in the second, particularly because she filled so little of the goal! Both girls made tremendous saves and may not have been aware that there was applause from both sides of the pitch for some of those brilliant saves.
Aimee is playing very well in defence and was excellent today with some very good tackles and good throw ins and distribution. Emma playing her first game since July fitted in brilliantly alongside Aimee in the first half and just knows what needs to be done. Lily was full of effort and industry as always and the second half in particular saw some of that excellent passing we expect of her. Olivia made some timely interventions in a very difficult midfield where there was a tricky job of closing people down and Nicola showed her strength excellently despite getting injured. Nicola's long range free kick in the second half was a whisker from going in and she deservedly won the home sides vote for man of the match.
Keep your heads up girls. Believe in yourself, you are good and this was a one off, promise. We're only two points from the top of the table!
