Nearly but not quite

AFC Waverton 2 - Wallasey Wanderers Red 4

An excellent fightback from the Waverton girls saw them get right back into this game from being 3-0 down at half time. This was a great performance from the team and shows that they have the quality to compete at this level and determination to fight back from a losing position.

Wallasey started off strongly on the big pitch and took the lead early on from close range. Another two goals followed with Cara powerless to do much about. Waverton's best efforts came from a Nicola header from Kiera's corner which went just over, a low shot from Kiera which hit the side netting, and a brilliant one on one from Lily which just saw the ball eventually inches away from the final poke around the keeper.

At halftime the girls were asked to keep their shape and not to let players drift behind them and the performance from then on was excellent. Ellie M was once again brilliant at the back with Ellie R alongside her always threatening on the attack. Cara was solid when she came out of goal and Olivia and Laura in midfield did their best to cover the expanse of ground. Aimee played in defence and in midfield and was again solid, whilst Caitlin and Nicola showed their strength.

It was these two players who grabbed the goals, and well taken they were. The first, a blast from Nicola followed excellent work from the team and the second from Caitlin running with the ball and coming in from the left. A third goal seemed possible when Waverton put pressure on with a series of long throw ins down the right, but the visitors sealed the game near the end with a well taken individual goal which was deserving of its importance in settling the game.

Wallasey Wanderers are a strong side and this was a great performance all round. Well done girls.
